When it comes to facilitating a healthy pregnancy, labor, and birth, it’s vital that you see Dr. Kim regularly for prenatal appointments. Prenatal visits will help reduce the risk of complications for you and your baby, as well as catch potential concerns early so that you can adjust accordingly.

how many prenatal exams should I have?

Because every woman and every pregnancy is slightly different, exactly how many prenatal appointments you’ll need depends on your specific situation. However, in most cases, Dr. Kim will set the first appointment when you are at least 8 weeks pregnant and then once a month until the 28th week.

For the next 12 weeks until the birth, he may recommend that you come in once every two weeks or once a week. If you have any preexisting conditions, if your pregnancy has been labeled high-risk, or if any risks develop during gestation, it’s likely that you will have more appointments than those pregnancies without these conditions.

Now, you may be wondering exactly what a prenatal exam consists of and what to expect when you go in.

Fortunately, prenatal exams are usually quite easy and painless. In fact, they can be a very exciting time as you are able to watch the growth of your baby and feel at ease knowing both of you are healthy!

And, of course, if there are any complications, it’s best that you know as soon as possible.

Here’s what to expect at a prenatal exam:

Screenings and lab tests, including ultrasounds, blood tests, and urine samples.

Checking your baby’s growth and development.

Assessing the baby’s position in the uterus.

Assessing and treating health conditions.

Planning for labor and delivery.

Women who don’t partake in prenatal appointments are three times more likely to have a baby with low birth weight or complications, so make sure you prioritize your appointments!
