High Risk Pregnancy

what is high risk pregnancy?

First, it’s crucial to understand that one in every ten pregnancies is labeled high-risk. All these means is that there is an increased chance of complications throughout the pregnancy, during labor and birth, or during postpartum. That being said, there are still plenty of healthy and complication-free high-risk pregnancies!

Dr. Kim has extensive experience with high-risk pregnancies and will be by your side every step of the way while you navigate this unpredictable time.

why high risk pregnancies occur?

There are many reasons why a pregnancy turn into high risk; however, the most common are having multiple fetuses in utero, being aged over 35 or under 15, personal health and habits, and complications that might have happened during or after previous pregnancies.

If you fit one or more of these categories, we will be following your pregnancy more closely, as there is a higher risk of stress for both you and the fetus. In addition to regular check-ups and screenings, Dr. Kim may ask you to set more appointments to ensure your, and your baby’s health stays on track. He may also give you more specific instructions throughout pregnancy and when creating a birth plan to avoid any excess strain being placed on the body.

You should always follow the doctor’s instructions whether your pregnancy is high or low risk. However, there are a few extra care instructions that you should be aware of during a high-risk pregnancy:

Take care of your body. In every pregnancy, but especially in those labeled high-risk, it is absolutely essential that you take care of your body. Prenatal vitamins, a nutrient-dense diet, hydration, sleep, exercise, and rest must be a part of your daily life.

Scale back as needed. A high-risk pregnancy means there may be added stress on the body. To combat this, you should try your best to slow down, especially if you have a full-time or stress-inducing job.

Go for that extra screening. Dr. Kim will inform and encourage you to visit the office more during a high-risk pregnancy. And while appointments are important, so are screenings. Increased ultrasounds will help the doctor keep an eye on you and the little one along the way.

Communicate. Don’t be afraid to ask questions! We are here to help you feel safe and informed during your pregnancy. You can call, schedule an appointment, or reach out at any time.

While high-risk pregnancies do sometimes experience potential health risks, our office knows exactly what to do to help you during your pregnancy and planning for birth so that you can feel safe and ready for what’s next!
