postpartum care

Many women focus so much on their pregnancy, the birth plan, and even preparing their homes and lives for a new baby that they forget they need professional care after having their baby! Postpartum checkups are absolutely essential. So let’s find out a bit more about what to expect at your appointment and why it is so important.

Postpartum Care

what is a postpartum checkup?

A postpartum checkup is a time in which Dr. Kim will assess your physical, post-baby body to ensure everything is healing as it should. During the appointment, he will check your blood pressure, weight, abdomen, breasts, and weight. As well as perform a pelvic exam, including the vagina, uterus, and cervix. If you had a c-section delivery, the wound will also be assessed.

It’s also a great time to check your blood sugar levels, especially if you developed gestational diabetes.

Dr. Kim and our entire office understand that you are going to have quite a lot to deal with after giving birth, and the last thing you need to worry about is booking your postpartum appointment. Therefore, we will ensure to contact you to schedule a time that fits your new schedule.

But just so you have all the information you need, the first appointment will likely be within 3 weeks of the birth and certainly no later than 12 weeks later.

And, of course, if you need extra care, we will continue to schedule appointments

when should i schedule postpartum appointments?

why are postpartum checkups essential?

Taking care of your body is important. And although it may feel like the hardest part is over, healing from any kind of birth can be a long process. Certain infections and health conditions can occur after birth, and while most of them are completely treatable, the doctor cannot help if you do not go in for your appointment.

As well, the postpartum checkup is a great time to talk about family planning and whether or not you want to go on birth control.
